About CAL PACT

The CAL PACT (Cal People and Computer Training) Program was initially developed to raise the basic computer skills level for all users in conjunction with the new Berkeley Administrative Initiatives (BAI) being implemented across campus.

A partnership between Human Resources and Information Systems & Technology was formed in 1994 to address this issue. The Basic Computer Skills Training (BCST) Task Force was formed to oversee the creation of a new program. BCST developed the CAL PACT proposal from February 1995 through June 1995. Campus outreach, through open forums and staff organizations, began in July 1995 (listed in the proposal appendices). Changes were then made to the content of the CAL PACT training model.

Course material was then developed for the pilot project. Four core competency classes were outlined and created: Introduction to Basic Computers, Internet Resources, Berkeley Computing Environment, and Computer*Health Matters. These classes were taught to pilot department participants.

After the completion of the pilot, additional computer literacy classes in software operating systems and applications were developed to provide further computer skills and knowledge required by the departmental work environment. The next campus outreach extended to departments involved in the BAI implementation: Accounting Services, Human Resources, and Departmental Benefit Coordinators (Summer 1996).

Starting Fall 1996, classes became available to any staff person on the campus. All classes are offered at no charge to the staff person or to departments.
