Course Descriptions Core Competency courses offer basic computing skills and
a foundation to function in the Berkeley campus computing environment. If
you are new to computers, start with these courses.
Computer Literacy
Course Descriptions These courses offer additional
computing skills and knowledge required by the departmental work environment.
Course prerequisites: All of the following courses require
a general understanding of computer concepts and proficient use of the mouse.

Courses CAL PACT maintains an archive of courses that are no longer
offered. You will find course documents and templates online for older
versions of software.

Competency Course Descriptions
Computer
and Internet Basics
This course has combined the topics from our previous "Computer Basics"
and "Introduction to Internet" courses. It explains basic computer
concepts and fundamentals, explores hardware and software components of
a computer, introduces the Windows operating system. Also discussed are
basic concepts related to using the Internet, searching for information
and general use of email.
Berkeley
Computing Environment
This course is now an on-line resource that focuses on the Berkeley homepage
and provides links to UC Berkeley's computing environment. Links include
administrative computing, user services, computer access and facilities,
dial-up access, e-mail and informational resources, policies for computer
use on campus, computer-related health counseling, software licensing
issues, and hardware and software sales.
Introduction
to Windows XP
This course requires no prior experience with a computer and covers the
basics of using the Windows NT/2000/XP operating system such as the
TaskBar, the Start Menu and shortcuts. The course will work with the
window elements and dialog boxes common to all Windows software applications.
No prior experience with a computer is required!
Computer
Health Matters Computer Health Matters explores health issues related to computer
use, demonstrates how to design a user-friendly workstation, and teaches
participants stretches to relieve computer-related aches and pains. This
course is offered by Ergonomics@Work.

Access
(Office XP)
Microsoft Access is a database management program that provides an easy
way to store, retrieve, and organize information. This series covers introductory
material that provides you with skills to create and work with databases.
This series is offered in three levels, allowing you to select the courses
most appropriate to your knowledge and skill level. Familiarity with Microsoft
Word and Excel is strongly recommended.
Access Session
1 Covers database fundamentals, data entry, table design,
filters and sorts.
Prerequisite: working knowledge of the
concepts taught in the Excel series
and Word series.
Access Session
2 Covers relationships, queries, pivot tables and charts.
Prerequisite:
working
knowledge of the concepts taught in Access Session 1.
Access Session
3 Covers creating of forms and reports, labels, and importing/exporting
data.
Prerequisite: working knowledge of the concepts taught in Access
Sessions 1 and 2.
CalAgenda
(Oracle Calendar 9.0)
CalAgenda is an online electronic calendar service for faculty and staff
at UC Berkeley. Topics for this course include: accessing your account;
changing user information; searching for users, resources, or groups;
scheduling events, notes, and tasks; creating and managing groups; setting
access rights; and accessing your schedule via the web. This course has
restricted enrollment limited only to CalAgenda
subscribers.
CalNet
Deputy Training Restricted enrollment. This course explains the
Kerberos Authentication system used at UC Berkeley, called CalNet. It
covers the duties of a CalNet Deputy and explains how to verify and activate
a Kerberos principal for other members of your department/unit.
Prior to taking
the course, you must complete the Application for Departmental CalNet
Deputy, located at http://uas.berkeley.edu/forms/

Excel
(Office XP)
Microsoft Excel is a spreadsheet program that records, analyzes, and calculates
data. This series is offered in four levels, allowing you to select the
courses most appropriate to your knowledge and skill level. Pre-training
assessments are available to help you choose the right sessions.
Excel Session
1Are
you ready for this class? This course covers basic Excel functionality, including opening
workbooks, working with the menus and toolbars, data entry, formatting
cells, sorting data and printing.
Prerequisite: Basic computer concepts and
proficient use of the mouse.
Excel Session
2Are
you ready for this class? This course covers Excel series concepts, calculations and formulas,
including relative and absolute referencing, creating split screens,
hiding and unhiding, and outlining data for presentation.
Prerequisite: working
knowledge of the concepts taught in Excel Session 1.
Excel Session
3 Are
you ready for this class? This course was previously titled Excel Session 3/4. Topic areas
include: making graphical presentations using Excel's Chart Wizard,
including formatting and editing a chart, and recording and accessing
macros.
Prerequisite: working knowledge of the concepts taught in Excel Sessions
1 and 2.
Excel Session
4 Are
you ready for this class? This course was previously titled Excel Session 5. Topic areas include:
using Excel filters, summarizing data, and pivot tables.
Prerequisite: working knowledge of concepts taught in Excel Sessions
1-3.
FileMaker
Pro 5.5
FileMaker is a database management program that provides an easy way to
store, retrieve, and organize information. This series covers introductory
material that provides you with skills to create and work with databases.
This series is offered in three levels allowing you to select the courses
most appropriate to your knowledge and skill level. Familiarity with word
processing and spreadsheet software is strongly recommended.
Filemaker Session
1
This course is an introduction to FileMaker and covers basic database
fundamentals, modes, views, navigation, data entry, printing, defining
new fields, and covers one simple layout.
Prerequisites: Basic computing concepts and familiarity with the mouse.
Strongly recommended: Word and Excel.
Filemaker Session
2
Topics include creating new databases, advanced options of defining
fields such as autoenter and validation, creating layouts, pop-up lists,
pop-up menus, check boxes, radio buttons, basic lookup fields, and importing
and exporting.
Prerequisites: FileMaker Session 1, and Word and Excel
Filemaker Session
3
Topics include relationships; advanced layouts such as lookup fields
from other files; portals; and summary fields.
Prerequisites:
FileMaker Sessions 1 and 2, and Word and Excel
InDesign CS
Adobe InDesign is a desktop publishing software that allows users to
integrate graphics and text together into documents. This two-part series
offers quick and easy approaches for first-time InDesign users. Experience
with Microsoft Word is helpful but not required.
InDesign Session
1 This course
covers the basics of using InDesign: understanding the InDesign environment,
using the toolbox, and working with palettes, text, and graphics.
Prerequisite: Basic computer concepts and
proficient use of the mouse.
InDesign Session
2
This course covers more advanced features of InDesign: using layers,
objects, and frames, changing strokes and fills, and creating libraries.
Prerequisite: InDesign
Session 1
PowerPoint
(Office XP)
PowerPoint is used to create presentation slides. This course covers
creating and customizing slides, creating notes and handouts, and giving
on-screen
presentations. Use of the templates and wizards is discussed. Working
knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel is strongly suggested for this
course. Note: Occasional course sections will be
offered on the Office 2000 software instead of version XP. CheckICEfor
schedules.
Workstation
Privacy and Security
Not all departments have IT staff to ensure their computers are secure from viruses
and malicious people seeking to exploit your information on the Internet. These
courses cover introductory level information regarding good practices for unmanaged
workstations.
Prerequisites:
Intermediate
knowledge of the Windows or Mac operating system; familiarity with
installing and configuring software applications; familiarity with adjusting
operating system settings.
Session 1:
Password practices, locking your workstation, keeping your
Operating System patched an dupdated, browser privacy and security
Session 2: Firewall
software, anti-virus software, locking your BIOS, and shutting down
unnecessary services
Web
Design Series
CAL PACT now offers a Web Design series comprised of seven courses
designed to be taken in sequence. This series covers the basics of hardcoding
XHTML, image creation and modification using Adobe Photoshop, fundamentals
of design and usability, and website design and management using Macromedia
Dreamweaver.
Note:It is crucial that you understand the requirements to attend Web
Design 4, 5, and 6: You must complete the XHTML
Skills Assessment to enroll in these courses. Please click

Web Design
1: XHTML part A
Introduction to XHTML. Covers the concept of HTML and XHTML, the use
of
basic tags and attributes, working with images and links, editing and
viewing XHTML documents using a text editor, and viewing your page on
the
Web.
Web Design
2: XHTML part B
Tables, Links, Skip Navigation, Commenting. Producing and modifying
tables,
creating different types of links (anchor, image, email), commenting
in your
code, skip navigation and accessibility recommendations for your web
site.
Web Design
3: Intro to Dreamweaver MX 2004
Images, Links & Basic Design Tools. Introduction to the Dreamweaver
interface to create CSS and XHTML compliant web pages, with elements
including text, lists, images, and links. This course also includes
a workshop period to explore the uses of the tools learned thus far
in the series.
Web Design
4: Intro
to CSS using DreamweaverXHTML
Skills Assessment required Restricted Enrollment. Introduction to Cascading Style Sheets within
the
Dreamweaver environment. Differences between internal and external
style
sheets. Creating basic tag and class styles. Editing styles using
Dreamweaver.
Web Design
5: Dreamweaver Sites and Tables XHTML
Skills Assessment required Restricted Enrollment. Review of basic
CSS concepts, defining a site in
Dreamweaver, table creation and use as a design tool
in layout view.
Web Design
6: Dreamweaver Templates, Nav Bar, ValidationXHTML
Skills Assessment required Restricted Enrollment. Creating and modifying
templates for a site. Creating a graphical navigation bar. Validating
web pages to meet current web standards.
Web Design
7: Photoshop for the Web
Creating and Editing Images for Websites. Covers the basic tools available in
Adobe Photoshop CS that are used to create and modify images for use in websites.
Topics include: resolution, dimensions, colors, layers, optimizing images for
the Web, image file types, image quality, resizing images, and using text in
images. Note: This
course runs three hours instead of the usual two.
Word
(Office XP)
Microsoft Word is among the most popular word processing programs available
today. Word includes features to help you create and format many types
of documents, and offers ways to enhance the look and content of your
documents. This two-part series offers quick and easy approaches for first-time
Word users. Pre-training
assessments are available to help you choose the right sessions.

1Are
you ready for this class? Covers the basic Word environment, file management, basic and advanced
formatting, printing, and customizing print-outs.
Prerequisite: Basic computer concepts and
proficient use of the mouse.
Word Session
2Are you
ready for this class? Covers mail merge; sections, columns and breaks; tables; borders
and shading; margins and indents; drop caps; find and replace; and templates.
Prerequisite: Working knowledge of the topics covered in Word Session
1.
